The AZW ebook format was created by Amazon to use with its Kindle ereaders. AZW is sometimes known as the Kindle File Format. The files can contain interactive contents pages and book navigation, as well as the main content of the book and basic graphics. Like the earlier MOBI files, AZW files are normally protected by digital rights management (DRM) technology. DRM is intended to stop users from copying and sharing whole books or sections with other users.
In 2011, Amazon introduced the newer AZW3 format which has more functionality than AZW. However, AZW files should still be readable on most newer Kindles, and you can also download the Kindle app for smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs. Because it’s Amazon’s proprietary format, AZW files will not open with most other ereaders, but you may be able to open them with Calibre’s ebook software. AZW and AZW3 ebooks are available to purchase from the Amazon Kindle Store.
PDF stands for ‘Portable Document Format’ file. It was developed by Adobe so people could share documents regardless of which device, operating system, or software they were using, while preserving the content and formatting. The format has evolved to allow for editing and interactive elements like electronic signatures or buttons. The PDF format is now a standard open format that isn’t just available under Adobe Acrobat. It is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).
PDF files aren’t typically created from scratch, but are usually converted, saved or ‘printed’ from other documents or images before sharing, publishing online or storing.
